Somalia: AMISOM withdraws more ground beyond Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia (Keydmedia) - Amisom in Somalia’s Mogadishu have withdrawn on Saturday morning key ground military bases beyond the capital, which recently captured from Al-shabab rebels, witnesses say.

AU Tanks and troops pulling out from Aslubta and Maslaha bases were seen early hours on Saturday morning about 6:00 a.m. local by residents. The troops went back to their former positions not far away from the area they have abandoned.

AMISOM’s Burundian Contingent vacated from Al Janal hill, which directs the southern approaches to the Mogadishu as well as the Maslaha building which sits on the road to Afgoye, an Al-shabab rebel stronghold

Last week, AU-backed government soldiers and AMISOM forces launched renewed attacks against holdout Al-Shabab locations on the outskirts- a move that AU said to be a plan to liberate the rebels out of the country.

Hardline Al-Shabab insurgents control large parts of central and southern Somalia, but are facing increasing pressure from regional armies, including TFG, AMISOM in Mogadishu Kenyan troops in the south and Ethiopia\'s army in the south and west.

AMISOM command in Mogadishu has not commented yet about the move.
