Somali forces push Al shabab out of new territories
BARDALE (KON) — An official says Somali troops and their Ethiopian allies have wrested control of key areas in the country’s southern province of Bay on Sunday, forcing Al-Shabab fighters to flee, Keydmedia Online reports.
Witnesses and a military official said Hundreds of joint troops backed by tanks swept into new territories including Moore Warabe, Walaq and Is-koris close to Berdale district from Al Shabaab insurgents, without encountering a resistance.
“Somali troops are on every corner in the towns now. Al-Shabab fighters abandoned it a few hours ago,” resident Habiba Hassan said by phone. “Fortunately the forces came while people were sleeping so no one felt any fear and the town changed hands peacefully.”
“Our forces have captured the town after small gun battles. We shall keep moving forward until we cleanse them from Somalia,” Said Bardale district commissioner, Mohamed Isak Qara’ase.
Somali troops and their AMISOM allies are in final preparation of offensives against Al Shabaab fighters in south and central of the country, according to African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Spokesman Col. Ali Adan Humad.
