Somali forces repulse fresh attack from the Al shabab
JOWHAR (KON)—At least 15 people are known to have been killed in a battle between Somali forces and the Al Qaeda-affiliated Al shabab militants in southern Middle Shabelle province, Keydmedia Online reports.
The fighting erupted on Tuesday night after Somalia’s al-Shabab militia attacked with machine guns and artillery on Government bases at Burane and Mahaday, two strategic towns near Jowhar, the provincial capital of Middle Shabelle region.
According to local residents, Somali rebel group al Shabaab has attacked late last night the city from several directions and seized briefly part of it. At least 15 people, 6 of them Somali soldiers died during the ambush attack.
Both sides exchanged heavy and small firearms in the pitch combat, with some reports that Al shabab destroyed Somali government military facilities in Mahaday town, including battle-wagons.
Before daybreak, the government troops backed by African Union forces secured the towns and the fighters of Al Shabab were repulsed back following a fierce counter-attack, reports said.
The situation has returned to calm and Business activities resumed again.
