Somali government, Al shabab claim victory over Gedo fighting
MOGADISHU, Somalia (Keydmedia) - Both TFG and Al shabab officials in Gedo region, southwestern Somalia have claimed clear victory over a fierce battle that took place overnight on the outskirts of Garbaharey town, Keydmedia reports.
Dayad Abdi Kalil, a TFG official who addressed the media, spoke about the fighting between the two sides and said government forces had inflicted irreparable losses on Al-Shabab rebels, and drove militants away from several stronghold villages nearby Garbaharey town, the provincial capital of Gedo province.
On his side, Sheik Abdiasis Abu Musab, the spokesman of Al shabab for the military operations claimed victory, according to pro-rebel radio station in Elasha Biyaha, saying that the insurgents operation had dealt a heavy blow to the militants in long-running efforts to win control of the conflict-ravaged Gedo region.
Residents confirmed on Friday to Keydmedia English News by the phone that the fighting on Saturday was the heaviest in the last few weeks, because of there had been aerial attacks by Kenyan defence forces against Al shabab bases.
