Speaking at the take-over ceremony in the state house, with the presence of president Hassan Sheikh, MPs and outgoing ministers, the outgoing Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon promised that he will work closely with the new PM Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed to fulfill his national responsibility.

“During The one year in office, my government has accomplished many tasks and achieved tangible success, namely foreign diplomacy, security, federalism and national reconciliation across the country,” said the outgoing PM.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud welcomed the New Prime Minister and showed his optimism of forming an effective government. The President pointed out that peace and stability in the whole country should be a priority for the new government.

On his note, Prime Minster Abdiwali Ahmed praised the outgoing Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon on his commitment to the establishment, rule of law, improved security and his personal respect for the Federal Constitution and Federal Institutions.

The new PM Abdiwali Sheikh Ahmed, 54, faces a giant task to rein in corruption, crush al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents battling to topple the central government, and rebuild the troubled Horn of Africa nation.

A dual Somali-Canadian citizen, Ahmed holds a doctorate in trade and development from Ottawa University and speaks multiple foreign languages.

He replaces Abdi Farah Shirdon, ousted by parliament after just over a year in the post amid fierce power struggles within the internationally-backed government. Ahmed comes from the same clan as Shirdon, which is likely to appease supporters of the former prime minister.
