1,000 arrested in a massive security operation in Mogadishu
MOGADISHU (KON) — Somali police forces accompanied by AMISOM peacekeepers conducted on Tuesday a massive security sweep in Mogadishu’s Wadajir , Hodon and Dharkenley districts, detaining almost 1,000 people, Keydmedia Online reports.
Residents in Wadajir and Hodon districts reported that they woke up Somali police forces and AMISOM troops deployed in the streets and carrying out stop and check operations in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
1,000 suspects have been detained during the pre-dawn door-to-door operation in Beerta Jaadka, Jaamacadaha, Siliga Ameerikaanka and Sey-Biyaano neighborhoods in Mogadishu, reports said.
Meanwhile, the suspects were overloaded in police truck-ups and taken to CID, criminal investigation department at Km4 area for questionings.
Residents added that the forces searched hidden IEDs, ammunitions and anti-vehicle mines during the today’s sweep.
The allied forces travelled the city’s villages in convoy with infantry divisions by asking questions to the passers-by and ordinary people.
Somali police Officers in charge of the security operation declined to comment the aim of their crackdown.
Mogadishu has been hotbed for random violence as Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab militants reverted to guerrilla attacks which left hundreds dead since 2011.
