The country’s Ministry of Defense said the tea shop explosion in Daynile was caused by an IED planted in a restaurant in Bangalo area, where many civilians and soldiers were having a dinner on Friday. A civilian woman was among the dead.

More than 15 people were also wounded in the attack and taken a nearby local hospital.

“In the aftermath of the blast, Pieces of human flesh were scattered there and the blast has largely ripped off the restaurant’s roof,” a witness said by phone.

A huge blast has rocked the city, sending plumes of black smoke scudding across the skyline of Daynile district, where has been a major bastion for Al shabab militants before Somali and AU troops took control in 2011.

“Some people were killed while drinking tea and others as they were walking past. It was an incident that terrorised the town’s inhabitants,” said another resident.

Meanwhile, Daynile district Commissioner, Hirey Muhidin Omar said that the bomb was planted on a roadside close to a government forces’ base in the area, a report conflicting to that of the defense ministry of Somali government.

Somali PM has condemned the attack.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of innocent people in today’s cowardly attack in Daynile,” Prime Minister Abdiwali Sheikh Ahmed said in a statement.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Al shabab has in the past carried out such bombings in the capital, Mogadishu.
