Galka’yo Deputy Mayor escapes a brazen assassination attempt
GALKA’YO (KON) — An official of Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland narrowly escaped assassination attempt Tuesday after his house was targeted by hand grenade bomb in the central Somalia town of Galka’yo, Keydmedia Online reports.
Some sources told Keydmedia Online that Deputy Mayor of Galka’yo, Abdi Osman Farah was slightly injured along with three of his bodyguards but nothing has been confirmed so far. That attack happened in the center of Galka’yo, the capital of Mudug state.
Mr. Farah, along with three persons who sustained Shrapnel wounds were rushed immediately to a local hospital in Galka’yo city, about 700 kilometers north of Mogadishu, Somali capital.
Immediately after the attack security forces arrived at the scene and started search operations. Several suspects were apprehended and taken to a local police station where they were being interrogated.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Puntland authorities have not released a statement about the incident.
Insecurity and politically motivated killings have been on a sharp rise in Puntland and authorities usually accuse extremist group Al Shabaab of southern Somalia of committing plots and assassinations against political leaders, elders and peace activists.
