By Abdi Dirshe - The Somali state has become an object of charity after two decades of political crisis; multiple actors claim that Somalia needs international humanitarian assistance and military intervention due to terrorism, piracy and famine.
By Prof. Mohamoud Iman Adan- Keydmedia - Virginia, USA - This is the latest revelation of Turkey and Iran challenges about Somalia. Turkey’s newfound interest in engaging with Somalia was triggered by a combination of different events: From the extension of humanitarian assistance during a time of great famine to the desire to establish a foothold in a strategic location so as to benefit future trade deals with Turkey and Somalia.
In a nutshell, a partnership with the U.S., as envisioned in this legislation, would provide Somaliland with the financial and military wherewithal it needs to make separation from Somalia a fait accompli. It would also lend Somaliland a mantle of legitimacy.
Special operations forces had been assisting local units for several years in battling al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaida. But shortly before leaving office, President Donald Trump ordered some 700 U.S. troops out of Somalia.
Until recently, Somalia was on an upward trajectory. Although it continued to struggle with piracy, famine, and terrorism, the country was turning the corner after decades of bloody civil war.
In March, the Kenyan government issued an ultimatum to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR): Create a plan to close two camps that host more than 430,000 refugees, or we will forcibly expel them to their home countries immediately. However, refugees say forced repatriation is not a humane option.
