Al-Shabaab fires mortar shells at AU base in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Al-Shabaab militants have launched a mortar attack on a military base housing Ugandan forces serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in Qoryooley district in the Lower Shabelle region.

There was no immediate confirmation of the casualties resulted from the mortars that some of them landed in and around the AU military camp which is located on the entrance river bridge of the agriculture-rich town, 120Km southwest of Mogadishu, the Somali capital.

Al-Shabaab said several AU peacekeepers from Uganda were killed in the morning shelling in Qoryooley, but there is no independent confirmation of the group's claim group.

Qoryooley fell to Somali and AU forces in 2014 during a large offensive that saw the liberation of many towns in the region, including its capital Marka and the incident port city of Barawe.

The attack comes as the group faced defeats in the latest military operations in the Mudug region, where the Somali army backed by Galmudug state troops regained control of key areas, including Ba'adweyne and Amara.
