Tragedy as floods kill children, wash away homes in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Father Hassan Abdullahi wanted nothing but to save his five children - four boys and one daughter when floods washed away his house in the south of the capital Mogadishu on Friday morning.

The children were unable to swim on their own so do the father. “I could not swim on my own,” he said in tears. But minutes later when they were driven out of the residence in Bula-Hubey village by a good neighboring swimmer, they were pronounced dead.

The floods caused by torrential rains swept away the homes forcing many villagers to flee with no support from the government. The tragedy has left a devastating impact on his life – burying his five children at one time.

The floods are subsequent during the rainy season in the entire city and this district has no exception. The region administration turned blind eyes to the sufferings of the underprivileged citizens who barely can afford to survive in this hard situation.

At least three others are reported to have died in the flood mostly children. So far, no government officials responded to this touching incident.
