A deadly second wave of Covid-19 hits Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Covid-19 has taken a toll with a total of 309 cases confirmed in the last 24 hours since the second wave has surged, according to the ministry of health.

Those confirmed to have contracted the virus across the country for the last 48hours are 1,830, including 147 cases registered in Mogadishu alone.

The pandemic is spreading rapidly in the entire capital, according to a statement issued by the ministry which announced the deaths of 8 people at Martini hospital in Mogadishu since Saturday.

The death toll climbed to 231 on Saturday while a total number of 6,991 have tested positive for the Coronavirus while 3,787 people have recovered.

The people don’t seem to have minimized the risks of the virus as they turn down the guidelines of the health ministry.

But it’s just the capital that the virus is at stake. There is a rapid increase of newly confirmed cases of Covid-19 nationwide with Hirshabelle and Somaliland are 77 and 53 respectively.

Earlier this month, the government ordered the closure of schools and universities in an effort to contain the spread of the disease.

What matters the most is the availability of the health facilities designated to treat the Covid-19 patients, with the latest grim reports from De Martini indicating that the hospital run out of oxygen.

Somali Government officials whose term in office has expired already were accused of embezzling funds from international organizations intended to curb the covid-19 in the country.
