A fresh US drone strike hits Al-Shabaab radio station in Somalia

Per Keydmedia Online sources, the drone attack in the district hit the "Radio Andalus" station operated by Al-Shabaab as its main mouthpiece channel with several offices in its strongholds in the country.

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A US airstrike in southern Somalia has destroyed a radio station used by the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab militant group to spread its message of violence to all corners of the country.

The US Africa Command [AFRICOM] said in coordination with the Government of Somalia, American forces conducted one airstrike in the vicinity of Tiyeeglow town, Somalia’s Bakol region, Jan. 18, 2021.

AFRICOM added that the initial assessments indicate the strike destroyed one Al-Shabaab compound with no casualties on the local civilians, a claim that often rejected by some Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International.

On 2nd January 2021, a pro-Al-Shabaab radio station, Al- Furqaan hit by a US airstrike. The report said at least 4 missiles hit a building in Kunyo Barrow town, Lower Shabelle region, damaging the station.

Monday’s drone strike against Al-Shabaab becomes 205th announced by AFRICOM in January 2017. Al-Shabaab has carried out deadly suicide and terror attacks in Somalia including the recent attack targeting Danab leadership in the Lower Shabelle region.

The United States declared this week all personnel in Somalia who have been training and supporting Somali forces, including its elite Danab special forces, in counter-terror operations for almost 5 years.
