A powerful explosion hits Somali capital amidst security measures

MOGADISHU, Somalia – An enormous explosion was heard on Wednesday morning in Mogadishu, the Somali capital ahead of the inauguration of the new president Hassan Sheikh which is slated for June 9.

Capt. Mohamed Hussein, a senior police officer has confirmed to Keydmedia English that the blast struck vehicle ferrying members of the Somali military in the northern Deynile district, a hotbed of Al-Shabaab.

At least one military officer has lost his life in the IED attack while three others have sustained a variety of wounds, including two passerby civilians, said Hussein. No group claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The city has been relatively calm since the presidential election on May 15 with no security incidents reported. The security experts say whenever Al-Shabaab remains silent, it is orchestrating an attack.

During Farmajo’s leadership, Mogadishu on the Indian Ocean has witnessed its deadliest terrorist attacks, including Oct 14 truck bomb at K5 [Zoobe] junction that left nearly 1,000 Somali people dead.

After being ejected from the capital in 2011, Al-Qaeda’s ally, Al-Shabaab waged attacks aimed at toppling the weak UN-backed Somali government which is protected by African Union [AU] troops.

U.S. President Joe Biden has last month approved a Pentagon request to re-deploy close to 500 special operations soldiers to Somalia to contain Al-Shabaab's threat to America’s interest in East Africa.

Two days after his election, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud thanked Biden for authorizing the deployment of American troops to Somalia to help the country’s army in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

The US has always been a reliable partner in Somalia’s quest for stability and fights against terrorism by training elite Danab forces and carrying out drone strikes targeting top Al-Shabaab commanders.
