KISMAYO, Somalia - The deadly blast took place in the port city of Kismayo, the capital of the Lower Jubba region, targeting the residence of a senior Jubaland port official.

The bomb killed two people - a pregnant woman and her son and injured a 14-year-old boy in the house on Tuesday night, according to Jubaland security ministry spokesman Jama Jofane.

Jofane said the house targeted with the IED is located in the Farjano neighborhood of Kismayo's Sinai branch, and that the dead and wounded were members of the family of the port official.

He added that the security forces have detained 20 people and explosives in connection with the attack that comes amid growing insecurity in the port city which is protected by the Kenyan army.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, however, police pointed the finger of blame at Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group fighting against AU and Somali troops.

Kismayo, 500Km south of Mogadishu was liberated from Al-Shabaab in late 2012 by the KDF and has since been ruled by Ahmed Madobe, a former Islamist who turned into a key ally of Kenya in Somalia.
