Airstrike Targets Al-Shabaab in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - An airstrike targeted Al-Shabaab terror group in Galmudug state, Somalia on Tuesday, the country’s ministry of information said in a press release the same day.

The ministry did not say whether anyone died in the strike but noted it does not believe any civilians were injured or killed in the air raid which it announced was aimed to support troops on the ground.

The government has not said the country that belongs to the warplanes bombed Al-Shabaab, but the US military is known for carrying out such attacks inside Somalia, weakening the group’s power.

The airstrike came two days after Somali government troops along with Galmudug regional soldiers retook control of Ba’adweyne and Amara towns in the Mudug region from Al-Shabaab during operations.

Somalia's army has been fighting the Al-Qaeda-linked militants for over a decade with help from the 22,000 African Union forces [AMISOM] from Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.

The ongoing operation was launched months ago in the Middle Shabelle region and expanded to several areas, including Mudug and Lower Jubba region with an aim to degrade Al-Shabaab before the polls.
