Al-Shabaab ambushes military convoy near Kenya

GARBAHAREY, Somalia – Heavy fighting between Somali forces and Al-Shabaab militants broke out in Caracase area of the Gedo region, close to the porous border with Kenya.

The fighting erupted after a military convoy traveling from Garbaharey to Beledhawo district came under attack by Al-Shabaab militants on Tuesday morning, according to local officials.

Residents said they are in panic and fear due to the frequent and rampant Al-Shabaab attacks that made their area a hotbed of conflict, forcing several families to flee their houses to nearby safer places.

The road that links Beled-Hawo to other big cities in the Gedo has been hit by battles between government troops and Al-Shabaab in the past as the region has been a flashpoint of clashes between Somali forces and Jubaland regional troops since last year.

Al-Shabaab has intensified attacks in Somalia since the start of the Holy month of Ramadan with most focus on the capital, Mogadishu, where it carries out blasts on high-profile targets.
