KISMAYO, Somalia – In one of the deadliest attacks this year, Al-Shabaab says it killed eight Jubaland state soldiers following a daring raid on a military base outside Kismayo port city.

A resident said the assault in Bar-Sanguni, about 50 kilometers north of the coastal city sparked a fierce gunfight between the two sides who sides exchanged heavy and light arms.

The dead include a senior military official named Capt. Yusuf Aden, who has been at forefront of the fight against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Juba region, according to sources within Jubaland.

The regional forces have managed to resist the attack and regained control of the base after a deadly gun battle that led to heavy casualties on both warring sides.

Bar Sanguni forward operating base, which had come under Al-Shabaab attacks in the past, including gun and mortar raid that killed a US soldier and wounded four others in June 2018.

Al-Shabaab has stepped up attacks on towns where the election of the 11th Somali parliament is underway with the group's aim to stop the crucial voting in the Horn of Africa nation.

Al-Shabaab controls approximately 50% of Jubbaland territory, holding the entire Middle Jubba region and in many areas of Gedo and Lower Jubba, where Kenyan forces have been operating under AMISOM since 2012.
