MOGADISHU, Somalia - Al-Shabaab militants have launched an attack on a military base in Bar Sanguuni located some 50 kilometers north of the southern port city of Kismayo on Monday.

Military officials in Jubbaland have told Keydmedia Online that they resisted the group’s offensive and forced the attackers to retreat after suffering an unspecified number of casualties.

The local residents reported hearing heavy gunfire as the two warring sides have battled for several hours in the key area, which is largely controlled by the Somali army and Jubbaland regional forces.

The Somali National Army has recently taken significant progress in the fight against the al-Qaida-linked militant group who is taking advantage of the current political turmoil the country is facing.
