Al-Shabaab attacks Ethiopian military base in Somalia

DINSOR, Somalia - Fighting between Ethiopian troops and Al-Shabaab militants broke out in the Dinsor district of the Bay region amid a severe drought that put the lives of thousands at risk.

The militants fired mortar shells at the Ethiopian military bases in the district before engaging in a deadly gunfight with the troops early in the morning, according to the local residents.

The battle has resulted in deaths and injuries to the warring sides with residents suffering casualties from the mortars rained down on the town, which is under the Southwest State of Somalia.

Al-Shabaab said Ethiopian soldiers died in the attack. However, Keydmedia Online could not independently verify the claims as the local officials were unavailable for comments on the skirmish.

The district is circled by Al-Shabaab and has been under blockade since Ethiopian troops captured it eight years ago from the Al-Qaeda-linked militants during a major offensive in the country.

Southwest state soldiers have abandoned the city last and some surrendered to Al-Shabaab, fearing for their lives after the security has worsened, according to the sources.

Al-Shabaab has recently stepped up terrorist attacks in the Horn of Africa country, trying to disrupt ongoing parliamentary elections that are more than a year behind schedule due to political wrangles.
