MOGADISHU, Somalia - Al-Shabab has burnt down three small villages on the outskirts of Afgoye town in the Lower Shabelle region, one of the areas worst hit by the conflict and drought in southern Somalia.

Pictures widely circulated on social media showed the militants set ablaze on Leego, Yaaq-Biriweyne, and Baladul-Amin villages forcing the residents to flee to neighboring Wanlaweyn to escape from a massacre.

There have been no reports of casualties as a result of the Al-Shabaab raid.

The attack came after the Al-Qaeda-linked terror group has accused residents of supporting clan militia who took arms and numerous times fought against them in the region near Mogadishu.

In Lower Shabelle, which borders the country’s capital has been the scene of battles between the Somali National Army and Al-Shabaab militants who want to oust the UN-backed government.

As the country faces recurrent droughts, the Islamists blocked aid deliveries, burned food, and even killed charity workers. More than 260,000 people died in the 2011 famine.
