Al-Shabaab frees militant inmates from jail after attack

BOSSASO, Somalia - The Al-Qaeda-linked terror group Al-Shabaab has seized briefly control of Bossaso police station in Puntland State of Somalia following a deadly attack at midnight.

Al-Shabaab fighters blasted their way into the station and engaged in a heavy hours-long gunfight with security guards before setting free hundreds of prisoners, including terrorists, and killed dozens of police officers.

The attack was heavy and well-coordinated, according to police sources and it began with explosions before fighters entered the facility that has been holding dangerous terrorists.

Puntland officials have not yet commented on the number of prisoners released, but KON learned that as many as 400 escaped from the main police jail in the northeastern port city.

It appears Al-Shabaab's intention was of freeing the prisoners held in the prison.
