Al-Shabaab ‘losing ground’ to allied forces in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somali military backed by Galmudug regional forces have retaken main areas from Al-Shabaab during a ground offensive with the US air support.

The massive operation to recapture the remaining towns under Al-Shabaab has started almost five weeks ago in the south of the Mudug region, central Somalia ahead of the election.

A statement from the Galmudug Ministry of Security said that SNA and Galmudug forces seized control of the areas east and south of Qaycad, where heavy fighting occurred.

The Galmudug Ministry of Security also said that the allied forces seized about 20 rifles, food, communication equipment, and other equipment left by Al-Shabaab.

The anti-al-Shabaab operations are led by officials including former Mogadishu police boss Sadak John, Galmudug security minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi and Senator Qeybdid.

The assault was launched after Al-Shabaab militants have claimed responsibility for a series of bombings and gun attacks against SNA bases in the region last month.

The Somali forces are getting US air support to dislodge the militants from the entire region, which has been the scene of terrorist activities in the past, according to the officials.
