MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab group has stepped up attacks on the government-controlled towns in southern Somalia since the country began the parliamentary election.
Al-Shabaab mortar shells struck Biya-Adde village in the Middle Shabelle region on Wednesday night, killing two members of the same family - a mother and her baby boy, the local residents have confirmed.
At least ten civilians were wounded in the barrage after mortars hit their houses in the small town and they have been taken to hospital in Jowhar, Middle Shabelle regional capital, 90Km north of Mogadishu.
The shelling is part of an ongoing military escalation in the region near the Somali capital, Mogadishu, which had been the ground for frequent battles between Al-Shabaab and the Somali army since last year.
Barely nine days earlier, Al-Shabaab militants stormed a main AU peacekeepers’ military base in El-Baraf in the same province, killing dozens of Burundian soldiers under ATMIS and seizing weapons.
Biya-Adde’s attack is the third targeting a Burundian military base by Al-Shabaab militants in the past two weeks due to the decline in the military operations and US drone strikes on the terrorists in Somalia.
The current and outgoing government led by Farmajo failed to fight Al-Shabaab and liberate the whole country from the terrorist hands that prolong the stay of AU troops beyond a decade.
