Al-Shabaab mounts attacks against TFG forces in Gedo region

KISMAYU, Somalia (Keydmedia) – Somalia’s Islamist militants linked with Al Qaeda have on Sunday mounted heavy attacks against Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a (ASWJ) and Somali government troops in Gedo region, south western Somalia, Keydmedia reports.

The Al-Shabaab rebels, armed with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), machine-guns, attacked a joint Ahlu Sunna and TFG bases near Garbahaarey town,the provincial capital of Gedo region, where government troops and its allied militias are also based. 

Witnesses in Tulo-Barwaqo, near Garbaharey town told Keydmedia by phone that At least 10 people from both warring sides were killed and 20 others injured, though there were conflicting reports on the number of casualties.

The Clashes erupted in the village near Garbaharey when Al shabaab fighters, launched premeditated attacks on Somali forces. The town is still under the control of Somali forces, but Al-Shabaab militants have continued to carry out attacks.
