Movement spokesman Abdel-Aziz Abu Musaab said his movement had also killed four Somali government troops in Buulobarde, a town in the central Hiran region of Somalia.

"The fighters of the movement managed to kill in a surprise attack on a camp in Buulobarde nine Djiboutian troops and four government troops," Abu Musaab said.

He added that movement militants had also managed to destroy some of the military equipment of the African peacekeepers in the camp.

The Al-Shabaab spokesman said, however, that five movement militants had been killed in the same attack.

He said his movement would launch more attacks against African troops in Somalia in the days to come.

The chief of Buulobarde, meanwhile, belied the Al-Shabaab spokesman, saying African peacekeepers had managed to abort the attack.

The town chief added that six Al-Shabaab militants were gunned down in the attack.

Somalia has remained in the grip of political violence since the outbreak of civil war in 1991.

The troubled country recently appeared to inch closer to stability with the intervention of African Union troops tasked with bringing Al-Shabaab to heel.

Although the militant group lost most of its strongholds, it continues to carry out attacks on Somali government officials and foreign troops.
