Al-Shabab claims mortar attack on military and diplomatic base

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Al-Shabaab fired several mortar bombs into the Halane base camp, which houses AMISOM, UN, and foreign diplomatic missions in Mogadishu on Tuesday noon.

At least three mortars slammed into the heavily fortified seaside compound, causing damages to AU vehicles and several main offices, according to sources.

No casualties have been reported so far.

The attack happened hours before the arrival of Jubaland state leader Ahmed Madobe at Aden Abdulle International airport. Madobe is a fierce critic of the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.

Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked terror group has in the past carried out similar attacks in the capital, a sign of the enormous challenges facing the government that promised to make security a priority.

Despite being pushed out of a vast ground, Al-Shabaab continues to carry out deadly attacks in Mogadishu as the group tries to oust the government and expel AU troops.
