The Al-Shabaab rebels, armed with machine guns and suicide vests, attacked a joint Somali and Ethiopian military base near a market in the heart of the town, where government troops are also based, sparking a face-to-face gun battle between both sides.

Aden Biid, Baidoa police chief told Keydmedia English News by phone that they had beaten back the assault, defending a main artery in town, and saying the strike had failed and several Al-shabab commanders were killed during the combat.

“I show my gratitude to the security forces for the sacrifice they did for their country and for their people to defend such attack by the rebels,” The police officer added.

The allied forces from Somalia and Ethiopia have been able to take control of the Baidoa town last month without a single shot, but Al-Shabaab militants have continued to carry out deadly attacks.

Al-shabab has not said any word so far about their overnight daring guerrilla-style attack in Baidoa town, the capital of Bay region of southern Somalia.
