Reports reaching us from the town, the headquarters of Lower Juba Province, say that the city had earlier in the day come under immense fire from Kenyan warships.

The warships have fired numerous missiles at the seaside city, hitting residential areas.

Locals told Keydmedia Somalia by phone from the town that the shelling follows when late yesterday night; A-Shabab fighters fired projectiles at a naval ship which came too close to the city’s port, thereafter prompting a retaliatory fire.

One person has been killed and three others injured in the shelling.

The situation in Kismayo remains tense as uncertainty prevails and people fear implications these shelling might have on their livelihoods.

Kenyan Naval ships and jetfighters have carried several attacks on the Juba area before which is mainly controlled by the Al-Qaeda-link group, Al-Shabab.

So far Al-Shabab has not commented on the issue, but the leaders of the Group were mobilizing fighters in Kismayu and other nearby locations to tense up their war against TFG and regional forces in the country.

Keymedia will keep an eye on the situation and will keep you updated.
