Al shabab ambushes Somali army convoy near Mogadishu, official killed

ELASHA BIYAHA, Somalia (Keydmedia) – Fighters from the Al Qaeda associated group of Al shabab in Somalia, have on Friday launched an ambush attack on a convoy mounting Somali troops in Elasha Biyaha area located south of Mogadishu, Keydmedia reports.

Local residents told Keydmedia English News Service that heavily armed Al shabab agents attacked columns of pick-ups carrying logistics for the government forces en route the newly liberated Afgoye town, 30 kilometers south of Mogadishu, killing Afrah Ali, Somali police commissioner in Elasha Biyaha area.

“Al shabab fighters mounted an attack on Somali soldiers in vehicles traveling from Mogadishu at around 10:15 am local time in the early hours on Friday and Mr. Afrah was killed in the attack,” a resident in Elasha Biya neighborhood told  Keydmedia English News Service by phone.

Casualties on Al shabab side following the attack are yet unclear.

Elasha Biyaha area locates just about 18 Km, south of Mogadishu with displaced of 400,000 Somalis and most of them have cleared brush and set up makeshift homes with sticks, plastic sheeting and old clothing. Families with more money build shacks from metal sheeting.
