At least 14 Kenyan soldiers killed in Al-Shabaab attack

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab extremist group says it has killed 14 Kenyan military personnel in a bomb attack in the coastal Lamu region on Tuesday.

In a statement posted on its affiliated online sites, the group described the bombing as a successful attack that targeted a military convoy in Kenya, a troop contributor to AMISOM.

The incident happened after a remote-controlled landmine struck KDF troops traveling between Milimani and Bargoni areas in the Lamu region near the porous Somalia border.

There were no independent sources verifying the claims of Al-Shabaab and the Kenyan military remained silent on the reported attack which came shortly after the ICJ verdict.

Kenya has suffered deadly cross-border attacks from Al-Shabaab since it dispatched its troops to Somalia in 2011 to fight the militants behind abductions and killings on its soil.

Al-Shabaab staged high-profile attacks in Kenya, including Westgate shopping mall, DusitD2 hotel, and Garissa University since 2013 which claimed the lives of hundreds of people.
