MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least 15 Kenyan military soldiers were killed and several wounded in a bomb blast in Lamu county near Somalia’s border on Monday, said Al-Shabaab.

The landmine explosion struck a military convoy carrying Kenyan defense forces [KDF] between Kayunga and Sankura as they headed to border patrol.

Local residents said KDF fired bullets in every direction following the IED attack, which becomes the second of its kind since yesterday. Lamu, which is a coastal region that hosts a US military base.

There were no independent sources verifying the Al-Shabaab claim of killing 15 soldiers in the bombing and the Kenyan military didn’t release any statement regarding the incident.

Since KDF entered Somalia in 2011, Kenya has suffered deadly cross-border attacks, targeting key areas in the border as well as Westgate Mall and DusitD2 hotel in Nairobi.

Kenya shares with Somalia a porous land border estimated 681 kilometers (423 miles) from the tripoint with Ethiopia to the Indian Ocean.

Al-Shabaab vowed to continues hit-and-run attacks in Kenya until Nairobi pulls its troops out of Somalia, where they are part of the AU mission [AMISOM], in charge of Jubaland state.
