MOGADISHU, Somalia – A senior police official says six people were killed and several others wounded following a heavy gunfight in the Somali capital, Mogadishu on Saturday.

Capt. Osman Jama, a police officer confirmed that the battle broke out after two rival groups within Somali National Army [SNA] clashed over a tax dispute at the Ex-control Afgoye checkpoint.

The dead include two University students caught in the fire while heading to the educational centers and a woman who used to run a tea shop in the busy junction early in the morning.

The violence showed lax insecurity in the capital after the leaders turned their eyes and attention to their re-election campaigns as Somalia heads to the polling stations on July 25.
