Canada grants asylum to Somali migrants in Australia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Canada announced the good news that it will grant asylum to more than 240 refugees, mostly Somali migrants who are held in Australian camps after their resettlement application rejected.

The undocumented refugees from Africa entered Australia and Papua New Guinea in an unauthorized way that finally led to seek a third country to host them through the UN refugee agency [UNHCR].

The UNHCR said it is working with Canada on the travel process of the all-legal immigrants from Australia to avoid being repatriated to the countries they have previously left due to war.

The development is a sign Canada is opening its doors to those who are fleeing from conflict, oppression, and ethnic cleansing in their home countries, mainly from Africa, Middle East, and Southwest Asia.

Since the civil war broke out in Somalia in 1991, millions of citizens fled the country to Europe, North America, Gulf nations as well as some African nations, including Kenya and Ethiopia for survival.

Canada is one of the countries that the largest Somali refugees are living for almost three decades, some have made progress in life, some have entered politics and held senior government positions.

A Somali migrant, Ahmed Hussein joined the Liberal Party and became the first Canadian of Somali heritage to get elected to parliament. He served as Canada’s immigration minister.
