Car bomb near Mogadishu kills senior Somali official

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A bomb explosion has killed a Somali official near the capital on Tuesday, the latest in series of attacks in the country amid the election period.

Garasbaaleey district commissioner Mohamed Abukar was killed on the outskirts of Mogadishu after an IED fitted to his vehicle was remotely detonated while heading to work early in the morning.

Abukar was first seriously injured in an explosion which he later died at a hospital, his family and police confirmed. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The DC was appointed to the post by Benadir governor on 30th May of this year, days after his predecessor Abdirahman Garyare was killed in a car bomb in the area.

Police pointed the finger of the blame at Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group that has been carrying out such terrorist bombings in the country, mainly in Mogadishu for a decade.

The terror group wants to oust the UN-backed Somali government which is largely protected by AU troops from Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Ethiopia, and Djibouti operating under UN mandate since 2007.
