Car bomb targeting AU convoy kills two in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least two people are confirmed dead and several wounded in a suicide car bomb attack in the Somali capital, Mogadishu on Thursday afternoon, witnesses said.

The explosion which was resulted from Toyota Noah packed with explosives ripped through a military convoy transporting African Union soldiers around Banadir Junction downtown at 4 pm local time.

The bomber rammed his VBIED into the convoy of the armored vehicles belonging to AMISOM – AU mission in Somalia just after leaving Somali military base – Villa Baidoa and heading to Halane camp.

“The car bomb blast was targeted AMISOM troops driving to Banadir junction and there was a plume of white smoke billowing from the scene into the air. One AU vehicle was damaged,” said a witness.

Keydmedia attempts to establish the number of deaths and injuries inflicted on AU forces have not yielded a positive result AMISOM was unavailable for comments on the attack.

Al-Shabaab in a statement said it targeted two American personnel working with a logistics company based in the US which is contracted to support the AU and Somali army.

The terrorist attack comes as Somali PM Mohamed Hussein Roble traveled to Balad, a former Al-Shabaab bastion that lies some 30 kilometers north of Mogadishu on Thursday morning.
