Locals said the battle erupted after heavily armed militants have attacked with mortars on military bases manned by Ahlu Sunna fighters and their allied Ethiopian forces at Wabho area in Galgadud province of central Somalia.

Both rivals in the combat have claimed the upper hand of the fighting. Sheik Abdiasis Abu Musab, Al shabab spokesman for the military operations told to a rebel-controlled local radio station that they have killed dozens of solders and burnt many war vehicles from Ahlu Sunna and Ethiopians.

Ahlu Sunna officials say the situation has returned to normal, as they were speaking on the phone for Keydmedia English News. They also said that their troops are in active way to pave the way the security offensives across the area from Al shabab.

A regional offensive has forced the Al Shabab group aligned with Al Qaeda from many of their strongholds in Somalia, with Ethiopian troops fighting in the west, AU troops in Mogadishu pushing to the outskirts of the city, and Kenyan troops battling in the south.
