Deadly Blast hits military convoy in central Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A remote-controlled bomb hit a vehicle in a troop convoy in central Somalia on Monday, killing at least two government soldiers, local residents said.

The IED struck the convoy as it drove through Omaad village located between Mataban and Bergadid towns in Hiiraan. Two more soldiers were wounded in the attack who are currently being treated at a hospital in Beledweyne, the regional capital.

Local residents said troops in the convoy opened fire after the blast went off to avert a gun attack by Al-Shabaab militants who are active in the area.

The region has been the scene of clashes in the past years since Somali and AU troops from Djibouti drove out Al-Shabaab from its main strongholds, which led the group to switch its insurgency to hit-and-run style attacks to show it has not been annihilated.
