Deadly Clan fighting claims 12 people in central Somalia

BELEDWEYNE (KON) - Authorities in central Somalia say more than 10 people were killed and dozens have been injured when Heavy fighting on Thursday raged between two armed clan militias in Hiiraan region, claiming at killed at least 12 persons, KON reports.

Local reports say, the battle broke out in Defow area which lies approximately 45Km north of Beledweyne city as a result of clan revenge assassination that left local businessman dead on Monday. 

Speaking with KON, Beledweyne mayor warned of the continuation of the clan fighting in central Somalia, saying the situation has to be returned to normalcy through dialogue and mutual understanding between the warring sides. 

This ongoing tribal fighting near Beledweyne town is attributed to farmland dispute, according to the sources. The wounded people mostly from  the warring sides were immediately rushed to Beledweyne general hospital where they are currently treated. 

Meanwhile, The local traditional elders and scholars in the region are reportedly making efforts to end the tensions and hostilities between the clans in Defow vicinity. 

Recently similar clan clashes  in Defow and Kabhanley localities claimed the lives of more than twenty people and many others were displaced from their houses. 

Central towns witnessed intense military campaign after Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers and AMISOM peacekeepers honed offensive against Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab militants in March, 2014.
