GURI'EL, Somalia - The death toll from day-long clashes in Somalia’s central town of Guri’el on Saturday has risen to at least 30, the local health officials and officials said on Sunday.

Thousands of people fled the combat between the Somali national army [SNA] backed by Galmudug regional troops and Ahlu Sunna, a Sufi sect that took control of the city on Oct 1.

The dead include a top Danab commander in Galmudug major Abdiladif Feyle and another Haram’ad police officer who paid the ultimate price for the capture of the strategic city.

Dozens of others were wounded in the confict. Galmudug has announced it captured prisoners of war from Ahlu Sunna, who were paradded today with blind-folded in the city.

Galmudug information ministry declared a ‘total victory over the battle against Ahlu Sunna, says it has captured the entire town and deployed reinforcement troops from Dhusamareb.

The bloodshed is the latest in a resurgence of violence in the central Galgadud region since the election of Ahmed Qoor-Qoor last year and the Ahlu Sunna leaders were driven out.

On Sunday, a plane carrying Turkish-trained forces from Mogadishu arrived in the Galmudug capital to reinforce the combined troops battling the ASWJ in Guri’el for the second day.

ASWJ has deployed fighters at checkpoints on the main roads linking Dhusamareb with Dhusamareb town to prevent rival sides from receiving reinforcements sent by Farmajo.
