Dozens rounded up in Mogadishu security sweep

MOGADISHU, Somalia – In the past 12 hours, Somali police arrested dozens of suspected terrorists during a security sweep aimed at stemming a wave of terror attacks in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

The Security forces raided the homes in the Deynile district within the northern part of the seaside city, nabbing suspects, mostly young men in the operation which comes ahead of the parliamentary election.

The local authorities said the massive operation that was ongoing in Mogadishu for the last couple of nights will continue until they stop Al-Shabaab terrorist group from carrying out attacks on key targets.

As the country is set to go to the polling stations by the end of this month with Al-Shabaab threatening to disrupt the electoral process by blocking the clan delegates from reaching the voting districts.

Already, the Al-Qaeda-linked group amasses fighters around several election locations, including Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug state in an attempt to stop the ballot which saw delays 3 times.

Last year, Al-Shabaab summoned more than 140 elders who voted for the outgoing lawmakers from across the country in its strongholds in the south, and give them orders not to participate next elections.

Somali government faces a daunting task to hold peaceful and inclusive elections in the country this year with no concrete measures towards the security of the 11 voting areas, including the capital.
