East Africa leaders to attend new Somali president’s inauguration

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Several heads of state and leaders are expected to arrive in Somalia ahead of the inauguration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on June 9.

Among the heads of state invited to the inaugural ceremony are Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, Djibouti’s leader Ismail Omar Guelleh, and Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed.

Preparation for the inauguration is underway in Mogadishu with leaders of the regional states in Somalia, foreign diplomats, and other dignitaries set to attend.

On Monday, a delegation from Djibouti landed at Aden Abdulle International airport under ATMIS guard as an advance team paving the way for President Guelleh’s arrival.

The inaugural event was scheduled to take place on June 1 but was delayed at the request of some invited leaders, mainly Guelleh, according to sources in Villa Somalia.

Reports indicated that Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni is among the guests. With three battalions, his country makes up the bulk of the AU forces in Somalia.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected as president on May 15, beating Farmajo in an indirect vote by the 329-seat parliament. He is the first leader in history to win 2nd chance in Somalia.

Mohamud ruled Somalia between 2012 and 2017. He now took over the office from the same leader he handed over the power just five years ago. It’s a rare democratic culture in Africa.

Somalia's relations with East African countries, especially Djibouti and Kenya reached the lowest point during Farmajo's presidency. The new president expected to repair ties.
