Ex-president asks SNA chief to keep troops out of politics

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Former Somali president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed met with the army chief at his residence in Mogadishu last night amidst fighting in the Somali capital.
It is not known what the two sides discussed as the meeting was held behind closed doors.

Sources told KON that the ex-leader asked the SNA commander to keep the troops off the politics in a bid to avoid another civil war in the country.

The meeting comes at a difficult time, and the country stands at a crossroads with the political leaders in a bitter deadlock over the term extension of the incumbent president by the Lower House last week.

Ahmed who served as the 7th president 2009-2012 has repeatedly accused outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo of using the national army for political purposes and attacking dissidents.

The international community said the extension undermines peace, security, and stability in Somalia and beyond.  It will also further delay holding the credible elections awaited by the Somali people.
