Eyewitnesses told Keydmedia English News service via phone from Beledweyne that the blast was a remote-controlled landmine that hit a convoy of vehicles carrying Ethiopian forces traveling the suburbs the town, causing huge casualties on the soldiers.
“There was a heavy explosion that shook the whole the city at about 6:00 am local time, it occurred at a road on the outskirts of Beledweyne, where Ethiopian forces have been traveling back to the town,” said a local resident.
The exact figures on the casualties could not be immediately verified following the explosion. Shortly after the blast the troops opened fire indiscriminately nearby civilians, but no deaths reported.
The attacks are the latest in a string of blasts including roadside bombs and grenade explosions set off in recent months since the allied troops from Somalia and Ethiopia wrested the town from Al shabab fighters in November last year without much resistance.
