Farmajo allows PM to manage the election and security

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Farmajo has officially handed over the country's elections and security to Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble today after addressing the Lower House chamber of parliament.

The decision came after the opposition candidates, regional states, and the international community have strongly rejected his two-year term extension approved by the house on April 12.

The outgoing president has asked the parliament to retreat from the divisive term extension to allow the caretaker PM to organize and conduct an inclusive and peaceful election in Somalia this year.

After Farmajo’s speech ended, the House proceeded to the process of the annulment of the extension resolution. All 140 MPs present voted to restore the Sept 17 Pact in a show of hands, per the speaker.

The move is a step in the right direction as it ends the bitter dispute over the president’s stay in office beyond his four-year mandate that officially expired last February.
