Farmajo divided the nation, lost a chance – US diplomat

WASHINTON, US - The former US ambassador to Somalia Stephen Schwartz said Farmajo has wasted an opportunity in Somalia to prepare for a peaceful, inclusive one person and one vote election in 2021.

In an interview with VOA Somali Service, he underlined that Farmajo has divided the country, especially the regional states, some of them had conquered the power through Villa Somalia backing.

The ambassador accused Farmajo of being responsible for the current crisis in Somalia, as he refused to reach an agreement with political stakeholders over the electoral deadlock during the latest talks.

When asked about interference in Somalia's politics, the ambassador noted that Farmajo had developed close ties with Eritrea, Ethiopia, Turkey, and Qatar, while undermining relations with the donors.

The US diplomat stated that Fahad Yasin, the current Somali intelligence agency chief has largely involved in politics and running the government behind bars while handling the funds from Qatar.

Yasin is the right-hand man of Farmajo and he has been focusing on plans to rule Somalia by military means instead of reviving the democracy in Somalia following three decades of conflict.

Farmajo’s four-year term overshadowed by corruption, nepotism and he has failed his election campaign promises, including the war on Al-Shabaab, the biggest threat to national security.
