Farmajo seeks support for his term extension from AU

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The incumbent president of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo whose term expired last February has now taken his extension term issue to the African Union after facing rejection from the western nations.

Farmajo flew to Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday, April 18 to meet with president Felix Tshisekedi, who is also chairman of the African Union, on Monday afternoon.

“I welcome AU to take a leading role in facilitating an election process in which every citizen elects their representatives through free and fair elections,” said Farmajo in a Twitter post.

This means that the outgoing leader wants AU back his two-year extension, which added fuel to the already political unrest in the Horn of Africa nation and drew condemnations from the US, UK, and the EU.

DR Congo presidency announced that the two African leaders have discussed the political and security situation in Somalia for two hours with sources saying Farmajo asked Tshisekedi for help to hold power.

The DRC president welcomed the Somali president's proposal to open talks with all Somali stakeholders in order to achieve a lasting solution to the electoral stalemate and move forward.

Last week, Farmajo signed into law a bill passed by the Lower House to extend his term by two years, ended on February 8, despite strong opposition from the opposition and the international community.

Parliament's decision came after talks between Farmajo and regional leaders in Mogadishu failed to yield fruit early this month due to the Villa Somalia plot to derail all efforts for a deal to win an extension.
