Former president rejects baseless claims surfaced on social media

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The 7th president of Somalia Sharif Sheikh Ahmed denied reports circulating on social media that he withdrew his candidacy for president to compromise for clan-mate hopefuls.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Ahmed said there was no meeting that Mudulod candidates agreed to compromise each other ahead of the country’s presidential election in October 2021.

The former leader termed such claims baseless and unfounded, adding that he always believed in free and democratic competition based on political vision.

"I want to make it clear that there is no meeting between intellectuals and politicians from the Mudulod who reached a compromise agreement among some of the candidates," he added.

Ahmed, a former leader of the Union of Islamic courts ruled most parts of south and central Somalia in 2006 turned politician in 2009 when he was elected as president for transitional Federal Government.

He now wants to run for the top post in the next presidential election, leading the Himilo Qaran party and made an alliance with 14 other candidates, most of them from Mudulod, including Hassan Sheikh and Abdulkadir Osoble.
