Fresh clashes erupt in central Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Heavy tribal clashes flared up on Saturday in central Somalia as the Horn of Africa country faces the worst political crisis resulted from the delayed election.

The two sides from Adado and Dhusamareb in Galgadud used artillery and light weapons during the gunfight which forced hundreds of residents in the Gadon area to flee their houses to escape the conflict.

Details of the casualties still remain sketchy.

Galmudug state authorities are yet to comment on the clan fighting that has been ongoing in the region for several years as local communities in deadlock over grazing fields and water wells.

Somalia has been beset by three decades of bloody war, piracy, and terrorism that left hundreds of thousands of dead following the ouster of the former military regime in 1991.

Currently, the country is at electoral crossroads as leaders of the Federal Government and the Federal Member States are in a standoff over the implementation of the September 17 poll agreement.

The outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo faces accusations that he is the main obstacle to the election and aims to reinstate dictatorship in the country after 30 years.

The international community failed to put pressure on Farmajo to hold free and fair polls in Somalia and engage actual dialogue with the opposition candidates as well as Jubaland and Puntland states.

Somalia has missed the election deadline in December 2020 due to the political row and dispute on the formation of the electoral committee and Gedo issue, where Jubaland wants SNA being pulled out.
