Galmudug releases list of candidates for Upper House

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Galmudug state president, Ahmed Abdi Karie (Qoor-Qoor) has on Tuesday night submitted a partial list of the candidates running for the upper house of the Somali Federal parliament.

The state Electoral Implementation Committee [SEIT] has thanked the President for releasing the long-awaited senatorial candidates and announced the election will be held on Thursday in Dhusamareb city.

Galmudug will pick six senators out of the eight seats it has in the Upper House. The candidates for the remaining two seats were postponed due to rivalry between Abdi Qeybdid and former leader Haaf.

SEIT said that the registration for the Upper House candidates begins today, one day before the election. Each senate hopeful should pay $20,000 for registration fees.

The 12 candidates will make their speeches to the Galmudug State Parliament on Thursday before voting commences later the day. The eligible voters are the regional assembly MPS.

The election of Somalia's Upper House which is made up of 54 Senators from all the Federal member states started in Jubaland last month and was followed by Southwest state while Puntland began today.
